Concern over rising abuse of natural resources

Our Bureau

Hyderabad , Nov. 5

THE Greentech Foundation has expressed concern over the increasing abuse of natural resources.

"We are consuming the world's resources at a pace that outstrips the earth's capacity to sustain life," Mr Kamleshwar Sharan, President of the Foundation, said.

The Foundation, a Delhi-based non-Governmental organisation promoted by several public sector oil and power companies and agencies, promotes environmental education and training.

Addressing the inaugural of the three-day conference and exhibition on `Environment management' here, he said human beings were consuming about 20 per cent more natural resources than the earth could produce.

"The quantity of freshwater and population of marine species have gone down nearly 40 per cent in the last 20 years. This is alarming," he said.

Inaugurating the conference, Mr Rakesh Nath, Chairman of Bakra Beas Management Board (BBMB), said any development project had adverse impact on environment. "We need to mitigate such adverse impacts should we take up more projects," he said.

About 350 environmentalists, scientists, representatives of NGOs and public sectors units took part in the conference.
