Announcements SBL conducting trials for homeopathic drugs P.T. Jyothi Datta
Mumbai , Nov. 15 IT may seem odd to associate homeopathic companies with clinical trials. But Uttar Pradesh-based SBL is working on a clutch of innovative homeopathic medicines and even doing clinical trials for a couple of them at New Delhi's Escorts Hospital. SBL expects to come out with two innovative drugs made of neem leaves and a dust allergen, respectively in a year, said Dr Beena Thomas, Head of R&D at SBL. Meanwhile, the company is doing trials for its heart-related medicine Tonicard and Tranquil (used for anxiety and depression) at the Escorts Hospital, she said. "We are looking at whether Tonicard can be used as an adjunct or add-on during therapy using allopathic drugs. The medicine is already in the market. We are undertaking further trials to see how it works for cardiac patients on allopathic drugs. Similarly, Tranquil is also undergoing trials in Escorts." Elaborating on the work done on neem leaves, she said that the extract is being "clinically verified" for skin, joint and muscular applications. SBL expects to introduce the medicine in "Materia Medica", the virtual "Bible for homeopaths", in a year, she said. In this time, the company also expects to submit its documents to the Drug Controller General of India for approval. Dr Thomas expected to be able to market both drugs in about a year. On similar lines, SBL is also working on a house-dust allergen and is testing it for skin conditions associated with respiratory problems. The medicine is being clinically tried with ENT specialists, she said. Meanwhile, she said, SBL was also working on other innovative therapies that combined homeopathic medicines. The Rs 35-crore SBL has production units at Jaipur and Majitar (Sikkim) and its R&D spend is about 6-10 per cent of the profits, top officials with SBL said.
