Software Satyam to expand Vizag operations Our Bureau
The Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, and Mr B. Ramalinga Raju, Chairman, Satyam Computers, greet each other after a joint press conference at the State Assembly in Hyderabad on Tuesday. - A. Roy Chowdhury
Hyderabad , Dec.14 SATYAM Computer Services Ltd has announced plans to expand operations in the port city of Visakhapatnam to handle IT services and business process outsourcing. Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, the Chairman of Satyam, Mr B. Ramalinga Raju, said the facility would, in all probability, replicate Satyam's centre in Hyderabad. Refusing to comment on the extent of land and overall investments, Mr Raju said it would be substantial. Mr Raju said, "Satyam employs about 7,000 people in Hyderabad alone, and overall it added about 6,000 people this year. Of this, about 3,000 were in Hyderabad. We are in negotiations with the State Government about the extent of land and other related issues and depending upon the offer, we would freeze it." Dr Reddy said the company had grown across multiple locations and is in the process of establishing centres in Kolkata and Chennai. Satyam's decision to expand operations in Visakhapatnam would be good for the State, as this will provide employment to local talent as well. "We are in the process of developing Vizag as an alternative technology hub after Hyderabad. With the likes of HSBC already there, we see great prospect for the city in terms of IT sector growth. Soon two-three other major companies are set to announce plans to locate their centres," Dr Reddy said while refusing to name them. "The State Government is in the process of finalising the new IT policy that would be announced in January. The policy, while fine-tuning some of the existing facilities, would seek to broad base its applicability. The policy has taken inputs from various industry segments apart from the three think tanks it had constituted. In fact, some of the provisions extended to IT companies with over Rs 50 crore investments could possibly continue. We will ensure that we do not lag behind any State in terms of overall support to the sector," Dr Reddy said.
