Exports & Imports Info-Tech - Software TCS remains top exporter Our Bureau
New Delhi , June 16 TCS has yet again emerged as the top software and service exporter in the country during 2004-05, followed by Infosys and Wipro. As per the `Top 20 IT Software and Service exporters in India' (excluding ITES-BPO revenues) ranking by National Association of Software and Services Companies (Nasscom), TCS topped the list with export revenues of Rs 7,449 crore followed by Infosys (Rs 6,806 crore) and Wipro (Rs 5,426 crore). Commenting on the survey, the President of Nasscom, Mr Kiran Karnik, said, "Despite a larger base, the Indian software and services industry has been able to maintain its growth momentum and delivered better-than-expected results. Software exports, the mainstay of the industry, grossed $12 billion in 2004-05, up from $9.2 billion in 2003-04, indicating a growth of 30.4 per cent for the year." With offshore adoption amongst the Fortune 500 companies increasing rapidly, from 300 in 2003 to 400 companies in 2004, Nasscom expressed optimism about the long-term potential of this industry. "This recent momentum complemented by low penetration levels of less than two per cent, will continue to drive rapid offshore adoption," Mr Karnik added. Satyam Computer Services ranked fourth in the list with revenues of Rs 3,377 crore, even as HCL Technologies was at the fifth slot with revenues of Rs 2,664 crore. Compared to 2003-04, there has been no change in ranking in the top five slots during 2004-05. IBM Global Services India and Patni Computer Systems were ranked sixth and seventh respectively, while i-flex Solutions with revenues of Rs 1,110 crore ranked eighth. Mahindra British Telecom (Rs 913 crore) and Polaris Software Lab Ltd (Rs 697 crore) completed the top 10 list. The survey does not include companies, such as Cognizant, which are US listed but have significant offshore operations in India. In 2004-05, Cognizant recorded global revenues of Rs 2,906 crore, which would have placed it 5th on this list had it been included. In addition, Syntel, Covansys, Intelligroup - all with an India-centric global delivery model - are excluded from this list. Nasscom said the industry witnessed rapid volume growth during the year as clients continued to ramp up engagement sizes with leading vendors. The top 4 players alone have over 660 $1 million clients, up from 441 in 2003-04. There are around 3,000 IT companies in India exporting to over 150 countries across the globe.
