COIMBATORE: The Gems and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) is planning to set up a design institute in the South.

The council has, according to Mr Ruban Hobday, Director, GJEPC (Southern Region), submitted its proposal to the Government.

Mr Hobday was in the city to inaugurate the Commerce Association at the Dr GRD College of Science.

He later told newspersons that the proposed institute would come up in the next one or two years and indicated the possibility of it being located at Chennai, Coimbatore or Tiruchi.

"The institute would deal with jewellery design, stone setting and diamond cutting," Mr Hobday said.

On jewellery exports, he said 17 per cent of the country's foreign exchange earnings was from export of jewellery to the US, Europe and the UAE. "We are now looking at newer markets like Australia and South Africa."
