K.R. Narayanan passes away

THE former President, Mr K.R. Narayanan, breathed his last this evening here.

According to the Commandant of Army's Research and Referral Hospital, New Delhi, Major General O.P. Mathew, Mr Narayanan was admitted to the hospital on October 29 as he was suffering from pneumonia and renal failure. The former President was on life-support system since October 31, according to official statement.

He is survived by wife, Ms Usha and two daughters Ms Amrita and Ms Chitra, who is India's Ambassador to Turkey, reports PTI. Mr Narayanan, a career diplomat before entering politics in 1984, was the unanimous choice of political parties when he became President in 1997 for a term till 2002.

He was elected from Ottapalam (Reserved) constituency in Kerala thrice consecutively in 1984, 1989 and 1991 and as Vice-President in 1992.
