Mr D.V. Dharmik, Chief Commissioner of Income Tax-I (Andhra Pradesh) has called for more tax compliance by various sections of the population. "It is very difficult to enforce compliance by penalising people. It has to be voluntary," he said.
Addressing a meeting organised by the Federation of Andhra Pradesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FAPCCI) on `the Union Budget - Changes in Direct Taxes' here recently, he said the Budget showed the inner strengths of the economy notwithstanding the constraints internal and external.
He said compliance had significantly been improved in the last 10 years as the economy witnessed good growth rates. "It still needs to grow further as increased tax collections would benefit all," he said.
Elaborating on various direct tax proposals made in the Budget, he said there were not many complications in the Budget.
Priorities change
"Priorities do change from year to year. These are decided by the Government in power. Accordingly, some exemptions are added and others deleted," he said.
He said the I-T Department in the State achieved a growth rate of 50 per cent this year in collections as against the target of 33 per cent. "This shows the willingness of our people in complying with the tax laws," he said.
