Announcements States - Maharashtra NPCIL plant to go commercial in July Our Bureau
Mumbai , June 15 Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd's (NPCIL) 540 MW plant, Unit-3 of Tarapore Atomic Power Project (TAPP-3) has been synchronised with the national grid. It is expected to be declared commercial in July 2006, six months ahead of schedule. The Atomic Energy Regulatory Board authorised synchronisation of the unit, which achieved its first criticality on May 21 this year, said an NPCIL statement. Unit-3 took only one-fourth of the time taken by its predecessor Unit-4, between criticality and synchronisation, it added. The experience gained is being utilised for upgrading the unit size to 700 MW; four such units are proposed to be built - two at Rawatbhata in Rajasthan and two at Kakrapar in Gujarat. Currently, TAPP-3 is in the mandatory tests stage, during which period the output will be varied, sometimes even requiring shutdown of the plant. Once the station is declared commercial it will produce electricity in a consistent manner and supply it to the grid. TAPP-3 and TAPP-4 are fully indigenous and have been designed and constructed by NPCIL. They belong to he pressurised heavy water reactor family, using natural uranium as fuel and heavy water as moderator and coolant.
