Shipping States - West Bengal Haldia hopes to get green signal soon for 2 jetties Our Bureau
Kolkata , July 11 The Haldia Dock authorities are hoping to receive shortly the environment impact assessment (EIA) study being undertaken by the Indian Institute of Port Management in respect of two waterfront multipurpose jetties proposed to be built. Once the EIA report is in hand, the dock authorities will initiate a move to obtain the environment clearance from the appropriate authorities, it is learnt. For the smaller jetty, estimated to cost a little less than Rs 50 crore, the clearance has to be obtained from the State Environment Department while for the bigger one, estimated to cost around Rs 100 crore, the Union Environment Ministry's approval will be needed. It is felt that the work on the smaller jetty could be taken up early subject to speedy clearance of it by the State Environment Department.
`Not to take BOT route'
The dock sources make it clear that as of now there is no proposal to have the jetties built on BOT basis. The dock authorities would like to execute the projects themselves as per the laid down procedures. But then much would also depend on the Union Shipping Ministry, which is within its power to insist on BOT mode particularly for the construction of the bigger jetty. Meanwhile, the construction work is in progress in respect of two multipurpose jetties (Nos. 2 and 13) within the dock. The Number 2 berth, being constructed by ITD Cementation, is due for commissioning by April while the Number 13 , being constructed Simplex, by August next year. With the completion of these two berths, the number of berths within the impounded dock system at Haldia will rise to 14.
