IPv6 in India - China to show the way

Our Bureau

Bangalore , Aug 17

India will soon get its native IPv6 network — on the lines of China's Next Generation Internet project.

IPv6 (Internet Protocol version 6) is an upgrade to the existing Internet Protocol version 4. It will expand the number of available Internet addresses and improve routing and network configuration.

The IPv6 Forum India has taken a step in this direction by signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the China IPv6 Council. The Indian forum hopes to learn from China's deployment of its Next Generation Internet (CNGI), which is one of the world's largest native IPv6 production networks.

The MoU will be crucial in enabling knowledge sharing and deployment of IPv6 in both countries.

IPv6 Forum India and China IPv6 Council will conduct joint research and trials on standardisation, address policing, and share know-how and experience for inter-operability testing, certification and authorisation.

"China and India are very similar in many regards, especially size of population, rapidly growing economy and speedy mobile and Internet subscriber growth. This cooperation is crucial in enabling knowledge sharing and working together for the increased deployment of IPv6," said Mr Jayachandra K., President, IPv6 Forum India, in a release issued by the forum.

The IPv6 network, which will be laid at a cost of $176 million, will ensure better security, video-on-demand services and other new features across devices.
