Outlook Audi plans to launch new-look TT model Mayur N. Shah
THE NEW Audi TT coupe.
Mumbai , Sept 8 Audi, the German luxury carmaker, has plans to launch the new look Audi TT with a 3.2-litre engine in India. Earlier, the company had launched the iconic (1998) model with a 1.8 litre engine in January 2005. The new-look model was globally launched in April 2006 and will hit India soon. The company is currently analysing the possible launch and would like to mesh it with other right-hand drive country launches across the globe. Therefore, it would be premature to fix the launch date or the price, said Mr Rahil Ansari, Country Manager, Audi AG. In the UK market, the top-end model is available for £29,085 ($54,548). The international price is an indicator of good news for the company. It is over and above the stipulated $40,000 that would have made it mandatory for a homologation process. The process is time-consuming, with the authorities (Automotive Research Association of India) taking a minimum of six months to approve the vehicle; also, the validation is only for a period of one year. Earlier, the company had launched the model with a 1.8- litre engine. It had to undergo homologation process as the variant was priced under $40,000. Moreover, according to critics, the 1.8-litre engine was not a marvel for the racing purists and fell short of expectations among prospective customers. The new model comes with a 3.2-litre engine that has a power output of 250 bhp and the dual sequential gearbox transmission option. By using this technology, gears can be changed without interrupting the power flow from the engine to the transmission, thus delivering smooth and continuous performance.
