Letters FDI in higher education
This is with reference to "Open university" (Business Line, September 15): As has been rightly observed, a government that is committed to social priorities, such as poverty, cannot be expected to invest more on higher education that caters to the needs of a small percentage of people. The government, even almost 60 years after Independence, has not been able to fulfil its Constitutional obligation of providing basic elementary education to all children. When we have welcomed FDI in other sectors, why should we resist the Commerce Ministry's proposal for FDI in higher education, if the aim is to provide the required infrastructure and to induct the best talent. In the context of providing 27 per cent reservation to OBC students, for which a huge investment is required to upgrade existing facilities, FDI in higher education will be a step in the right direction. But at the same time sufficient care must be taken in consultation with the Human Resources Ministry to see that our cultural and moral values are not compromised. S. Nallasivan Tirunelveli
