New Delhi , Sept. 22

The Government is planning to open 100 food testing laboratories, said Mr Subodh Kant Sahay, Minister of State for Food Processing Industries, at the inauguration of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and India's Food Research and Testing Laboratory (FRAC), on Friday here.

Mr Sahai said, "India is set to witness an exponential growth in the Food Technology business, that will even overtake information technology and biotechnology."

He added that the Government was planning to add 100 more food testing laboratories to the existing 31, for which a large pool of qualified food technologists would be required.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Kapil Sibal, Union Minister for Science and Technology and Ocean Development, said, "The challenge in the future would be to meet the exacting standards that Europe and other developed countries will impose on import food items from the developing world. We have to gear ourselves up to meet those standards." He added that the Indian household spends 50 per cent of its income on food, 80 per cent of which is not processed and 95 per cent of which is not packaged. "This opens a new opportunity for industries in the food business," Mr Sibal said.
