Reliance Comm to launch video streaming service today

Ambar Singh Roy

Kolkata , Nov. 8

Reliance Communications is set to formally launch a mobile video streaming service on November 9, when the keynote address of the head honcho of a global IT major at a Mumbai event will be hosted on the video streaming platform, according to company sources.

The sources said mobile video streaming is similar to a webcast, except that the events can be viewed on mobile phones. They said the service has great potential in providing online video footage of popular events to mobile phone users.

According to them, while there are no independent estimates on the size of the video streaming market in India, the company puts it at Rs 250-300 crore a year. The mobile device must support audio and video streaming capabilities to use this facility. Currently about 50 per cent of Reliance Communications' 27 million subscribers have devices that support audio and video streaming functionalities. It is expected that all handsets launched in India hereafter will have audio and video streaming functionalities.
