Medical insurance scheme for poor unveiled

Hyderabad , Nov. 22

The Andhra Pradesh Government has decided to send a team of officials to West Bengal to study the owner-tenant issues related to farming.

Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, the Chief Minister, has asked the Revenue Department to send a team to that State to study the issue and find a solution that would satisfy all the stakeholders.

At a meeting here on Wednesday, he reviewed the progress of implementation of Jayati Ghosh recommendations. Soon after assuming power, the Congress Government had appointed a committee headed by Ms Ghosh to study the reasons for farmers' distress and suicides. The mandate for the committee included suggesting measures to redress the problems of the farmers.

The panel came out with a report that comprised 176 recommendations that sought to improve the lot of farmers. The Government implemented 161 of them, while referring nine to the Union Government, Nabard (National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development) and the RBI. Six recommendations were rejected.

At the review meeting, the Chief Minister monitored the department-wise implementation of the recommendations.

The Government felt that these measures had started yielding results. The Chief Minister was happy that there was a substantial fall in the number of suicides.

Medical insurance

Meanwhile, the Government had announced a comprehensive medical insurance for all the white card holders (for people below the poverty line). It would be implemented from Sankranti (January 14, 2007).

The Chief Minister would soon hold a meeting with Health, Civil Supplies and Rural development to finalise the scheme.

The scheme, which would benefit 1.76 BPL families, would offer policies at Rs 100 a year for individuals and Rs 300 for an average family.
