Chennai , Jan. 14

The Japanese Government would "positively" consider funding the Rs 1,500-crore national high-speed gigabyte network project of India, according to Mr Dayanidhi Maran, Union Minister for Communications and Information Technology.

This network would cater to applications such as telemedicine, education and e-governance. The National Informatics Centre (under the Department of Information Technology) is working on the project, which was recently taken up by the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, during his visit to Japan, Mr Maran told presspersons after meeting a high level Japanese delegation. The delegation was led by Mr Yoshihide Suga, Minister of Internal Affairs and Communication and Privatisation of Postal Services, Government of Japan.

Mr Maran said the Indian Government had assigned a "high" priority for the project. The meeting expressed satisfaction on the development made on projects identified for joint ventures between the two countries, he added. It also reaffirmed commitments to work towards the objectives of the India-Japan ICT Forum, synergising the potential between the two countries, he said.
