Gujarat plans fortified milk, chocolates for school children

Our Bureau

Ahmedabad March 26 Encouraged with the State Government's achievements in fortifying edible oil and wheat flour to remove deficiencies of micronutrients, the Gujarat Chief Minister, Mr Narendra Modi, has announced to provide fortified milk, chocolates and sweets as part of the mid-day meal scheme to school children of the anganwadis to improve their health and attendance.

"We have started a pilot project in the Danta taluka of Banaskantha district and three months of our experience have yielded good results as school attendance has increased by 25 per cent. Everyday, children are provided with a new flavour of milk. We now want to expand this programme to the entire tribal belt of Gujarat," he said at separate functions in Ahmedabad and Banaskantha on Monday, in the presence of the Union Agriculture and Food and Civil Supplies Minister, Mr Sharad Pawar.

Since the children are easily attracted to chocolates and sweets, the State Government would provide these fortified articles to them under a new scheme called "Baalbhog" to be launched shortly.

He also referred to the encouraging results obtained after providing fortified edible oil and wheat flour to the girls and players during the last two years, improving their performance levels.
