3G policy by month-end: DoT

Our Bureau

New Delhi, April 4

The much-delayed policy for allowing third generation mobile services in the country could be announced by the end of this month. The Department of Telecom said that it was looking at the proposals made by the telecom regulator and a policy should be in place in line with the TRAI recommendations. "We hopefully will announce the 3G spectrum policy by the end of this month. We are considering the TRAI proposals and I don't think there will be any major divergence in the policy," said Mr Dinesh Mathur, Secretary, DoT, on the sidelines of an International Telecommunication Union function.

DoT had earlier said that the 3G policy would be announced by March 31 but delays in getting the spectrum vacated has postponed the decision. If the TRAI views are accepted by DoT, then an operator seeking 3G Spectrum on a pan India basis will have to pay a minimum of Rs 1,400 crore.
