New Delhi May 9 Intel on Wednesday launched the latest generation of technology for its laptops, Intel Centrino Pro and Duo targeted at the business and consumer segment. Centrino Pro processor technology primarily addresses the security issues of the business class operating on the enterprise network. However, Centrino Duo processor technology is for consumers who want to connect to high-definition TV and video, play high-performance games and so on. It claims to reduce the load and run time for frequently used memory intensive application, enabling the computer to boot up 20 per cent faster, thus reducing battery power consumption.

"Last year, the number of shipments for the notebook stood at 1.5 million as against 1 million a year earlier. About 40 per cent of notebook buyers in India are first-time PC buyers. We are targeting this segment which would like to combine most features available for the desktop in the notebook," said Mr Ramamurthy Sivakumar, Managing Director, South Asia, Intel Technology India.

"This kind of product would be for the niche segment in the consumer space and IT pro organisations in the large enterprise segment," said Mr Piyush Pushkal, Manager PC Research, IDC, India, adding that Intel continues to dominate the domestic market despite its rival AMD getting a foothold here.

Mr Sivakumar said he was bullish on notebooks based on this processor technology, as most notebooks would be soon available on this platform. He, however, declined to give a specific target for the Indian market. The notebooks would be priced below Rs 50,000 and would gradually become cheaper as volumes pick up, he said.
