Our Bureau Mumbai, July 11 The Anil Ambani-controlled Reliance Communications has awarded an IP based $ 400 million contract to Alcatel-Lucent to upgrade its CDMA and GSM network by adding additional mobile switching centres and base stations. Alcatel –Lucent will also provide a suite of network integration services, including network optimisation, system support and general project management, said a release from Reliance. Alcatel-Lucent is a global provider of hardware, software, and services to telecommunications service providers. “Our wireless network will cater to customers across 20,000 towns and 60,000 villages upon completion of the current phase of expansion,” said Mr Anil Ambani, Chairman, Reliance Communications. The expansion of the company’s wireless CDMA and GSM network will be a significant trigger to the company’s national teledensity target of 500 million by 2010, added Mr Ambani. Lucent had earlier supplied CDMA equipment to Reliance in 2004. The Reliance Communications scrip was down by 0.54 per cent to close at Rs 539.7 on the BSE today.
