BSNL plans to launch triple player services

TV programmes through broadband connections on cards

Kochi, Aug. 25 BSNL, Ernakulam Secondary Switching Area is all set to launch triple player services that provide voice, data and video through broadband.

Speaking to newspersons, Mr Charley Mathew, Principal General Manager, said that the equipment for the commencement of these services have been ordered and that they would be introduced in a few months.

Content providers have to identified and selected for the facility.

There are also plans to introduce TV programmes through broadband connections, he said.

Since the Government has decided to celebrate 2007 as broadband year, the Ernakulam Secondary Switching Area is in the process of expanding the broadband customer base from 12,000 in 97 exchanges to 30,000 by the end of the year.

He said there also plans to launch SMS-based request for Cellone services from September 3.

Additional facilities like plan change, billing address correction, national roaming, etc., will be provided through SMS to 9446001234.

Amrita Learning tie-up

BSNL has also partnered with Amrita Learning to offer Internet-based assessment and learning programme for children.

Amrita Learning, developed in collaboration with Amrita University, is a research-based assessment, learning and practice programme that can be used from the comfort of the home or school computer.

It provides a targeted learning environment for children as young as three-and-a-half years up to standard 7.

Mr Raghu Raman, founder of Amrita Learning, said that the programme would enable both the challenged child and the above average child to work at their own levels at their own speed.

The content addresses core subjects like English and Maths and contains over 2,500 lessons with over 100,000 exercises.

The entire content is aligned with the CBSE syllabus.

The Principal General Manager said that the company would soon add five lakh mobile customers to the current base of 3.5 lakh subscribers.

Besides, it would add additional 250 towers in the region to improve coverage.

In the area of landlines, the region has a 5.8-lakh customer base and there are about 15,000 in waiting list beyond the city limits.

The company is planning to clear it this year itself, he said, adding that the target is to provide telephone on demand.
