‘Bharti leads pvt players in earnings’

BSNL top earner in Sept quarter


Though mobile sector is the highest revenue earner for the telecom companies, long distance segment is also heating up with new players foraying into this sector.

New Delhi, Nov. 16 Bharti Airtel emerged as the top revenue earning private telecom company during the quarter ended September 2007, according to numbers released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India.

All of Bharti’s telecom business generated revenues of Rs 7,069 crore, according to the TRAI quarterly report. The second highest revenue earner among the private sector was Reliance Communications with Rs 3,940 crore closely followed by Vodafone Essar with revenues of Rs 3,729 crore.

State owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd was however the overall top earner during the quarter with Rs 9,242 crore. All the operators combined together earned revenues of nearly Rs 31,000 crore in the three-month period. This also resulted in the Government earning about Rs 2,600 crore in the form of licence fee and spectrum charges.

Telecom companies have been seeing a growth in revenue over the past few years primarily due to growing subscriber base.

Long distance segment

Though mobile sector is the highest revenue earner for the telecom companies, long distance segment is also heating up with new players foraying into this sector.

In the long distance telephony segment, Bharti is the top earner with nearly Rs 1,200 crore followed by RCom which earned revenues of Rs 1,100 crore.

State owned BSNL is at the third spot in this category followed by Tatas managed Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd. BSNL is still the largest operator in the domestic long distance segment and VSNL continues to hold its number one spot in the international long distance segment.

New entrants AT&T, BT and Sify had revenues of less than Rs 100 crore. The US major had the highest income among the new players at Rs 68 crore.
