Asus Technology plans R&D centre by next year

Adith Charlie

Mumbai, Nov. 30 Taiwanese IT hardware products firm Asus Technology Ltd will set up an R&D centre in India by calendar 2008. The centre will act as a research hub for all its product lines, Mr Andrew Tsui, Managing Director, Asus Technology, told Business Line, on the sidelines of a press conference here on Friday.

Asus’ product portfolio includes notebooks, motherboards, graphics cards, optical drives, and other PC/networking components.

“Very soon we will be hiring 30-40 R&D engineers and send them to Taiwan for training. These engineers will form the backbone of our R&D activities in India,” Mr Tsui said.

Though Mr Tsui declined to provide more details, he said that the company’s R&D centre and the proposed manufacturing unit will become functional at around the same time, but in different cities.

The company had earlier said that it has zeroed down on Chennai for setting up a manufacturing hub in the country. Asus had also announced that it will split its manufacturing operations from business division by January 2008.

Currently, all of Asus’ products are imported either from Taiwan or Shanghai, according to company officials.

The company is also keen to set up exclusive retail outlets for its mobile products, by the early part of next year.
