Terrorism Government - Security PM calls for setting up of Federal Investigation Agency
Our Bureau New Delhi, Nov. 27 Strongly condemning the terror strikes in Mumbai which claimed over 100 lives, the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, today called for ‘immediate’ establishment of a Federal Investigation Agency. Blaming elements outside the country for the terror strikes in Mumbai, the Prime Minister warned that India will not tolerate the use of territories of its neighbours for attacks here. He called for employing instruments like the National Security Act to deal with situations like the terror attack in Mumbai. “We will take a number of measures to strengthen the hands of our police and intelligence authorities. We will curb the flow of funds to suspect organisations. We will restrict the entry of suspects into the country,” he said. Dr Singh said that India will take up strongly with its “neighbours that the use of their territory for launching attacks on us will not be tolerated, and there would be a cost if suitable measures are not taken by them.” The well-planned and well-orchestrated attacks, probably with external linkages, were intended to create a sense of panic, by choosing high profile targets and indiscriminately killing foreigners, he said. “I strongly condemn these acts of senseless violence against innocent people, including guests from foreign countries. I offer my deepest condolences to the bereaved families and sympathies to those injured. I salute the courage and patriotism of the police officers, including the Chief of the Anti-Terror Squad, Mr Hemant Karkare, and men who have laid down their lives in fighting these terrorists.” Earlier in the day, the Union Cabinet took stock of the situation and reviewed the security scenario in the country. Briefing media after the Union Cabinet, which was chaired by the Prime Minister, the Home Minister, Mr Shivraj Patil, termed the attacks as “very disturbing” and said “we are all sorry about it.” About 200 NSG commandos have been sent to Mumbai, Mr Patil said, adding the Government expects the operation to be over “very quickly”. “The Cabinet has condemned the dastardly attacks in Mumbai,” the Union Urban Development Minister, Mr S. Jaipal Reddy, told reporters after the meeting. “The State and Central Governments are taking all steps to overcome the situation. Mumbai is an important city and financial capital. Such untoward incident in the city is critical for the economy,” said Mr Murli Deora, Petroleum Minister. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) stated that it expects the Government and security agencies to uncover the full scope of this nefarious attack and the forces behind it.
