IDBI Bank employees plan protest

Mumbai, July 5

Employees of IDBI Bank, under the banner of the United Forum of Employees and Officers of IDBI Bank, will go on a one-day strike on July 15 to protest the introduction of 30 per cent variable component in their salary package and the ‘unilateral’ change in service conditions, according to a senior office bearer of the Officers’ Association. The public sector bank has 10,000 employees — 7,500 officers and the rest in the workmen category. According to Mr R.S. Athalye, General Secretary of the All India IDBI Bank Officers’ Association, bilateralism has been given the go-by during the restructuring of compensation and benefits of employees. The objections and apprehensions of employees to the introduction of variable pay as well as changes in service condition have been brushed aside by the management on the pretext of harmonisation of terms and conditions of service, he added. “This is the first time that variable pay is being sought to be introduced in a public sector bank. The elements that will go into the structuring of the variable pay are not clear. We fear that variable pay could be used as a tool to harass employees,” Mr Athalye said.
