New Projects Industry & Economy - Power States - Maharashtra Tata Power plans 2 coastal plants in Maharashtra Our Bureau
Mumbai , March 20 Tata Power Company, which was in the process of finalising a 1,000 MW coastal power plant in Maharashtra, may now put up two 1,000 MW plants if conditions prove favourable, according to Mr Adi Engineer, Director, Tata Power Company. "It is Tata Power's aim to set up mega power plants close to the coast in the State. We have surveyed several sites," said a statement from the company quoting Mr Engineer. The company had been looking at a coastal plant near Mumbai, at a location called Vile, but had to revisit its plans again to so as to be able to create a captive jetty for fuel that could also be located close to the plant. Mr Engineer was speaking at the "groundbreaking ceremony" of the company's new 250-MW coal-based unit (number 8) at the company's Trombay thermal station. This plant, which will involve a total investment of Rs 860 crore, will be completed within 28 months. . The unit will use imported coal with very low sulphur and ash content, given the strict adherence to environmental guidelines. Work on another 250 MW coal-based unit (no 9) is likely to commence soon, said a statement from the company, quoting Mr Engineer. "We will have some finality on this within the next eight weeks." Among the other generation units planned are a 100 MW diesel- run generation set at Khopoli, close to the existing Tata Power facility. The 1000-MW coastal plant should be completed by 2010, said Mr Engineer. There are two super-critical units to the power plant, the setting up of which will differ from each other by seven to eight months. "The announcement is a significant step in augmenting power supply to the city of Mumbai," said Mr Engineer.
