Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd (MRPL) has said that it has received the environmental clearance by the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) for the Bharat Stage (BS) VI auto fuel quality compliance project and associated project facilities.

With the clearance, the company will be able to achieve the conversion of the existing BS IV quality motor spirit (MS) and high speed diesel (HSD) facilities entirely into BS VI quality MS and HSD. This will help achieve the production of 1.2 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of MS and 7 MTPA of HSD of BS VI standard.

The documents submitted by the company while proposing the project stated that 20 acres of land in the existing refinery complex will be used for the proposed project.

The clearance letter said that the Ministry accords Environmental Clearance to the project under the provisions of EIA (Environment Impact Assessment) notification dated September 11 2006, subject to the compliance of certain specific and general conditions.

It may be mentioned here that the BS VI standard specifies 10 ppm sulfur content in gasoline (petrol/MS) and diesel fuels.
