Will be able to decide in August, join up with HCL Infrastructure, says company
Fresh engineering graduates hired by India’s fourth largest information technology firm, HCL Technologies, staged a protest in front of the company’s offices in Noida, Chennai, Bangalore, Pune and Hyderabad on Monday. They demanded that the company convert the offers to actual jobs.
These engineers were hired by the company in September 2011 and given Letters of Intent (LoI) to join the company in few months, but more than a year later, they are still waiting for the joining date.
Some 80 engineers gathered in front of HCL Tech’s office in Noida Sector 3 where the top brass of the company sits, including Vice-Chairman and Joint Managing Director Vineet Nayar and Chief Executive Officer Anant Gupta.
For the Noida protest, freshers came from colleges HCL had visited in August 2011 and made placement offers, including Maharaja Surajmal Institute of Technology, Amity, Maharaja Agrasen Institute of Technology, GB Pant Engineering College and Guru Tegh Bahadur Institute of Technology.
According to students coordinating the protests, freshers from colleges like Gandhi Institute of Technology and Management (Hyderabad), Andhra University, Maharashtra Institute of Technology (Pune), Vellore Institute of Technology (Tamil Nadu), and Sastra University (Tamil Nadu) protested at the gates of various offices of the company.
“As soon as we gathered to protest in front of the HCL office, we were called in by some senior officials, who asked us to sit for four hours in the auditorium. We asked for clarity on joining, but the officials kept repeating, ‘we will let you know by August’,” Piyush Khandelwal, one of the protesters, told Business Line.
He said the freshers were also given the option to join HCL Infrastructure instead of HCL Tech (for which they got the LoIs), but at a lesser salary. Business Line had written about the issue in early February.
“The company asked us to join for a Rs 2.75 lakh a year salary, which is lower than the Rs 3.25 lakh offered during campus recruitment. Also, we have been asked to take an entrance test afresh for joining HCL Infrastructure,” he said.
However, the company said it is an option offered to the hired students, who can join the company immediately as the vertical has vacant positions. And, even if they fail the test, the LoI will still hold for the HCL Tech vertical and they can join the company once positions get created, a company official said.
“We have openings for around 400 people there and few may open up soon. We have asked these freshers to join us there at the same positions as they were offered in the LoI (as Graduate Engineer Trainee),” Nitin Pande, Vice-President – HR, HCL Technologies, told Business Line.
He said the company will be able to decide on taking in more candidates by August and will decide on a timeline to on-board these freshers as, by then, HCL would have finished its business planning.
But the unemployed freshers were furious over the delay and demanded to know why the company had given the LoIs if it did not plan to on-board them.
“On one hand, the company is showing positive results quarter-on-quarter, why are they doing such things. We just want clarity just like other companies have done. Infosys, which had hired our friends during same time has at least given them the assurance and joining dates of early 2014,” said one of the protesters requesting anonymity.
“We are not even asking for salary for the first three months, as we want to work with this company and that too in HCL Tech, not HCL Infrastructure. We were hired as Software Engineers and in Infrastructure , it is like a BPO job, which we can’t do and lose our career,” said Anshul from Agrasen Institute of Technology.
The engineers and students shouted slogans against the company and said they were ready to go on a hunger strike from Tuesday, should HCL Tech hold back information about the joining date.
The company called in the police which asked the protestors to meet the District Magistrate.

No software company faced such protest. Pity on you HCL having such
inefficient officers who cannot even give "concrete answers" regarding
students questions about joining date. "Ehics is basic element of
Business" without which businesses cannot survive for long term.
This event has resulted in tarnishing image of HCL among freshers who
will advice their juniors to trust smaller comapanies rather than HCL
I fully support these youngsters. In a tough economic environment, it must be really
difficult for these youngsters to be without a job for more than a year and living
everyday in lingering uncertainty. With lax to zero regulation, IT Companies have
become very self centered and extremely selfish. They are exploiting the soft and
docile nature of middle class people to the hilt. IT Employees should form a strong
union and set minimum standards of employee engagement. May God be with them
in their quest for livelihood!!
e want job as they offered in the LOI, not in infra or other. HCL Tech is changing there words each and every time. We are totally helpless. Over 6k+ students are waiting for their joining out of which 1300 who have cleared the test called FRP. Hcl offered us before that those who clear this test will get immediate joining, now it's around 5 months after we have passed FRP, till date they haven't offered any DOJ. When they will complete posting to remaining 5k+ students under the condition that they haven't given DOJ for these 1300 who have passed FRP
I am one of the HCL Recruiters. I felt proud of being selected in this company. But now, I really worrying about my future. We sitting idle in home for an year. We will lose our freshers tag in 2 months. Even they were not sure about DOJ from August. In Dec, they said couple of weeks, then from Jan 2013, now Aug 2013. So it will continue forever. We need exact date now itself., that too before April. As I am far away from these places, I couldn't attend this protest. We need Date of Joining. Nothing else. Pain for parents too. Get a union my friends. You will be amazed now much progress you can make. Because you are not unionized, HCL knows they can do and say whatever they want because you do not have collective bargaining powers. The same advise goes to employees of Kingfisher Airlines.....
The poster in the pic says it all. A company that claims to treat
employees first is now treating fresh graduates like this. Its really
unfortunate.
IT as an Industry is always sailing on hypocrisy. So far so good. They can not form an Industry at all . It may be high money revolving, yet like Cine Industry , IT Entrepreneurs are not dependable and a laughing lot, whatever they do they do with a double intent of exploiting the resources and clients. After all they forgot that no one can live ever in earth.
The IT employees must start up a movement to expose the wrongs of IT Industrialists.
We were in no mood to do such kind of things. They previously
mentioned that the joining will start from Jan 2013 itself. But they
never bothered to mail us anything regarding joining. When asked about
it they said "We have no visibility on joining" Is this the
responsible behave of the HRs? They say Employee First. But we never
felt like treated even second/third/../hundredth or so. They kept on
fooling us day by day, saying your joining will come Shortly/Soon/In
couple of weeks/blah blah. We'll protest again if they dont do
something in favor of us. Its high time now. You'll get the taste of
your own medicine. Have patience HCL !
Hello folks ! i know it's difficult to get an offer letter and then feel let down on the way. I have a suggestion. You'll have what it takes to set up a software development company. I'm sure you'll agree it's not rocket science. If you'll get together and put your ideas together and organise yourselves you'll can start an employee owned 'software development firm'. Well done buds.I wish I was there.Anyways,I will try my level best to support the cause in the next stages. We have had it enough and it is the time for us to react.Let them see the strength of the youth of this country.Some old people f****ing with our careers shall not be tolerated any more. It is not the delay that has enraged us.It is the false promises(a plethora of them..including location reference..bla..bla),illusions(FRP...couple of weeks fiasco!!)and the unruly,unprofessional behavior meted out by the officials that has led us to loose it. Now its time..bring it on guys.

I can't believe how such a big IT company can give fake promises and

I got selected in HCL for Project Cum Placement. I completed my academic project in HCL by May 31st , due to project requirements, my project contract period was extended periodically according to the needs, due to delay in getting my Degree Certificates, my DOJ(for regular employment ) was delayed.My managers promised me that u continue as an acdemic trainee until you get degreee certificates.Once I get the degeree certificate,they told me that the company has stopped the fresher on-boarding temporarily and we will process you once the company starts freshers onboarding.Currently,I have 1 years of experience in HCL.And also they are paying only rs6000/month exclusive of tax deduction.But there is no recoginition of work and the managers won't help us at any point time.I am helpless.Even,a small sized company paying Rs10000/month.There is no proper policy and process in HCL
We have been through the same phase with Mphasis, But they have given
joining as march 2013, for the guys selected in april 2011. I want to
support you guys.So that before playing with our careers these market
giants have to think a million times.

placed students in mahindra satyam and tech mahindra are also facing the
same situation.. more than 1200+ students are waiting for thier date of
joining... and company hr's are not even repling....
they are ruining our future
I am a 2012 batch passed out student from ITER, Bhubaneswar. HCL
recruited around 46 friends and till now no news for joining.Due to
this I am also suffering regarding joining in another core mnc(indian
head office at gurgaon).When I am asking to my college TPO he's saying
that HCL guys haven't got their joining,then why you are worrying. So,
due to this delay joining of HCL other students also facing
problems.So,it should be resolved as soon as possible. At least they
can give a tentative DOJ so that we can do other courses without
wasting our time.
The issue is because of the way its handled. Management has to give a 'concrete' answer on yes/no and the reasons, dates. If they made a mistake they should say sorry. What is NASSCOM doing? if they are an industry body, then they have to represent the employees as well not just the senior management of big companies. Lets see if NASSCOM does anything proactively in this matter

Companies do go through a business cycle.Try new age start-ups that are growing and also doing well. Rather than looking at the past, look towards the future. Believe in yourself and grow faster in companies like www.eTechies.in
Atleast the company can put them on training until they get a project. They don't have to sit at home idling.
After having seen and survived several redundancies in India and in U.S, my advice to these youths is to keep up hope, keep upgrading your skills and when you get a job, don't squander the money on parties and fanciful things

Even Cognizant has done the same with 2008 batch pass outs. They did not
keep their promise. The most unethical part of an organization is not
respecting the mail sent by them to the people who got the offer. In the
mail it was clearly mentioned that the joining will be no later than
2009 May though i am a 2008 pass out. But i joined in August 2009.Now
cognizant is the second biggest. When running a company, Ethics are
secondary. Profit is primary. Only TCS fares somewhat better in this.

its disgusting to see the name of satyam with ruin...we satyamites are full on track..i my self got selected for satyam in 2011 and got joined in the company in 2012 and mahindras kept every promise they given to us..what had happened with us is just dely..and the people who got selected recently for satyam i request you to be patient, you surely land up in the great organization mean while just streamline your skills...as a current proud satyamite i can say that
Before a year i thought i am lucky person in India who placed in
hcl.but now it is all different.they are playing with our
sentiments,they think that we are the mango people of banana
Republic,where these giants can do whatever they want.what is the
logic of showing large profit in quarterly results and replying
freshers,shortage of project, no business requirement blaw.. you won't
believe how does hcl responding to our queries regarding DOJ.they have
very crafted, short and sweat answer "Joining is scheduled in batches
according to your academic calender and our business needs,you will be
informed through the mail" for almost all queries.
4th largest IT compay has no plans for freshers very sad..hope these
students get justice..hope they get there doj soon
These words are not enough to explain what we have gone through. Fake
HR policies to delay joinings, and treating the way like we are the
puppets in their hands to play like the way they want. Smart service
desk replies for every query regarding joining like "will inform in
couple of weeks". Since september this is happening with some 5000 odd
students. We were never clear about our joinings because the company
wanted us to be like this. Though they hav clearly stated that the
joinings must end before june 2013 in one of their mails, they are
atating that they will look at this after august.
I feel sorry for you guys. Even if you get the job offer from the said company(which I believe you should, though delayed), IT(Information Technology) is no longer a viable career.
You can spend some years in this industry, to be replaced by freshers later(for obviously lesser salary).
So guys - work in IT if you don't have much of other option. But don't sit back relaxed and try switching to other avenues, if you can.

I thought indian companies placed ethics above money.companies like this will not survive for a longer time.remember guys,' what goes around, comes around". i Read a comment saying HCL will not get any freshers in future.i disagree. in a country this big, sure they'll get. but the difference is, the best ones and talented ones will think twice to join a firm like this.i heard, MAHINDRA SATYAM is also doing like this.

i have also placed in HCL n still awaiting for DOJ. so my request is to make a group in facebook and add all freshers who placed in HCL so that all of us can collectively take a decision on this issue. I dint knew about the protest...so if we make a group then stil many of us reach out there and solve this issue.
actually, i don't think this is right way to do. guys,the whole world is
under recession. understand how indian IT companies work. they do work
which is outsourced by developed countries. when they are not
outsourcing how can HCL hire? even my friend, 2012 pass out, he joined
another top IT company( ranked in TOP 3) last week only. i hope you guys
are also 2012 pass out. also why cant you guys join some other IT
company or other good jobs in the 2 years(as claimed in this report,
from 2011 till today). note: i am not HCL employee.
This is even true for Hexaware Technologies....the whole 2nd batch was given 1.5 month of the said 2 month training and was sent home...they said that joining would br given in april then again just before 7 days of starting the refresher training they further delayed the date to jully dont know wat will happen.....getting a job now is so hard in this time of year when freshers from 2013 will be soon out.
Not a good situation for HCL to be in. And worse, it tarnishes the image of Vineet Nayar who claims to put employees first. Though technically the protesters are not employees, they must be treated with due respect. 2011 passouts and still waiting for HCL to revert! While I feel sorry for the freshers who are not getting other opportunities, there is definitely something wrong with the HR. If the business conditions are really unfavorable, why not send regret letters? A professional organization can do so much! It appears that the management is keeping their supplies ready, to be used as and when necessary.
Really shame on such an IT Company.
I have worked for this company for 4 years and I know them inside out.We also faced the same situation in 2007 when after getting the offer letters we were made to wait but only for a few months.The initial few months made me realize that to succeed in this company you have to believe on your skills and interpersonal relationships.But I believe HCL is short of projects and that is the reason for the delay.I would suggest them not to be allured by the brand image and start looking for other options immediately.My best wishes are with all of U U!!!

Hope HCL now stops taking it casually any more and would seriously
work on it to have the hired students on board ASAP beginning from the
students hired in 2011 and advise the exact DOJ soon. Why they hired
the students in 2012 when they could not accommodate the students
hired in 2011?? Can they justify it?? Anyway if they hired they must
have all of them on board in order of hiring schedule.

There is no security for their jobs even if they get placed, I can vouch on that based on my 13 year old career. Instead of sitting at home for more than year, why didn't they try to do something on their own? There are tons of opportunities. It might be difficult in the beginning, but will be more secure option in the long run. I know a start up in Bangalore hiring freshers for Ruby on Rails and Android/Java. Even 2011 batch didn't get the doj...then when will be the
2012,2013.....and hiring members....?after 5 yrs...what the hell it is
even placed without anything..No more fresher name...within two
months..if there is no open position right now why they are hiring
still...?are they fool the students by giving LOI..
wow, i don't believe this. I graduated in 2010 and was hired by HCL tech and got my DOJ in June 2010. They paid very less and expected us to slog for 9+ hours every day. Thank god, I left within a year.
Welcome to the IT industry folks!. All the hype has fizzled out and uncertanity is the name of IT industry. These freshers are better-off joining some other Industry. It is such a pity, hundreds of colleges were started solely dependent on IT industry - BE, MBA, MCA/BCA.
It is a stupid statement that HCL Infra is in BPO. It is the fastest growing line of business of HCL and mostly freshers who join Infra start earning more than Tech within 2 years and the gap only increases. It is Service desk, Infra Support and consultancy work but then in sucha wide variety of work, you won't know where you would land in HCL Infra..same holds true for HCL Tech as well. As a matter of fact, working for HCL infra means the best push for your careers, friends.
