The capital city of Thiruvananthapuram is under a tight security cover ahead of the formal opening of the 35th National Games on Saturday.

The fortnight-long event that Kerala is hosting for the second time will see thousands of athletes and technicals test their sporting skills at a string of venues for various disciplines and spread across seven districts.

Sentries and additional security personnel have been deployed at each of the 12 venues in the capital city. The city police have launched intensive night patrolling. Armed personnel are also part of the patrolling team.

City Police Commissioner H Venkatesh said all venues for the Games have been ‘secured.’ Adequate number of security personnel, surveillance cameras and related infrastructure have been put in place.

From this morning, at least 1,200 policemen, including the entire city police machinery, two companies of the Border Security Force and seven battalions of the India Reserve Battalion and State Armed Police will be deployed on the streets.

The city police have been on a state of high alert following Maoists' threat and reports of possible infiltrations via the coast. It is keeping a close eye on the Games venues through additional security cameras of its own and also of contracted agencies.

Most of these additional cameras have already been installed. Combing operations would also be intensified, Venkatesh said.
