Adding to its line-up of entry-level sports and performance motorcycles in the country, Yamaha Motor India on Friday launched its MT series of naked bikes with the MT-15.

The 155 cc motorcycle will be priced at ₹1.36 lakh (ex-showroom).

Yamaha said that the target customers for the motorcycle 20-year-olds in metros who are looking to transition from lower-end two-wheelers to a performance offering. The company already has a fully-faired 150 cc motorcycle in this segment — the R15 V3, launched last year. The MT-15 is positioned below the FZ25, a 250 cc naked bike launched in 2017.

The MT range from Yamaha has models like the MT-03 and the MT-09 that are known in the international market. However, Yamaha did not confirm if these bikes would also be brought to the Indian market. The MT 15 will take on the likes of TVS Apache, Honda Hornet and the Suzuki Gixxer in the 150 cc to 200 cc range.

Yamaha is using its ‘The Call of the Blue’ campaign to market the MT 15.

“Yamaha will offer three motorcycle series in India under ‘The Call of the Blue’ campaign, the ‘R series’, ‘FZ series’, and the new ‘MT series’. The launch of the new MT-15 will further multiply the brand’s excitement as it would entice customers in exciting, stylish and sporty motorcycling with its unique torque and agility along with design excellence and engineering,” said Motofumi Shitara, Chairman, Yamaha Motor India.

The MT-15 makes 19.3 PS power at 10,000 rpm and a maximum torque of 14.7 Nm at 8,500 rpm. The liquid-cooled, four-stroke engine is mated to a six-speed transmission system. It also gets single-channel ABS.
