The trough of lower pressure over the Lakshadweep area has deepened overnight on Friday into a conventional low-pressure system.

The ‘low' lay over south Arabian Sea and adjoining parts of central Arabian Sea, an evening update from India Meteorological Department said.

MAY INTENSIFY

The IMD has put the system under watch for further intensification to being ‘marked' by Saturday.

The US Navy's Joint Typhoon Warning System sees ‘medium' risk of it developing as a tropical storm (monsoon depression) but without assigning any track for onward movement.

Satellite guidance available from other global models suggested the probability of a movement away from the west coast of India and landfall over the Somali coast and into the Gulf of Eden.

The odd forecast hinted the possibility a western disturbance moving into the region from west-central Asia with its underbelly touching the northern Arabian Sea.

The westerly system could scoop up the Arabian Sea storm and drag it towards east-northeast, but not closer enough to toy with the Gujarat coast.

Instead, according to this model outlook, the system might die out over the north-east Arabian Sea at a location equidistant from the Karachi and north Gujarat coasts.

But the system will bring unseasonal wet weather over entire west coast of India, with bouts of moderate to heavy rain over coastal Gujarat and less so over the interior of the State.

TROUGH IN BAY

Meanwhile, to the other side of the peninsula, a rain-driving trough has shifted alignment closer to coast and lay extended from south coastal Tamil Nadu to north coastal Andhra Pradesh.

A high weather alert issued by the IMD said that heavy rainfall would break out at one or two places over Tamil Nadu and Kerala on Saturday.

A weather outlook valid until Monday said that rain or thundershowers would occur at many places over coastal Tamil Nadu on Saturday and at most places thereafter.

Rain or thundershowers has also been forecast at many places over interior Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Rayalaseema, coastal and south interior Karnataka, Lakshadweep and at one or two places over the remaining parts of south peninsular India.
