Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry has requested the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister to press the Centre to set up All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) at Thoppur in Madurai.
Government landHailing Chief Minister’s insistence with the Centre to set up AIIMS in Tamil Nadu in the first phase during this fiscal year itself, N Jegatheesan, Chamber President, in a statement here said that despite the suggestion of five suitable sites in the State by the Chief Minster, including Thoppur, the Centre in 2008-09 had announced that AIIMS would come up at 385-acre Government land at Thoppur.
However, the opportunity slipped away and the Centre selected Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal for setting up the top notch medical institute.
If Madurai gets an AIIMS hospital, the benefit of quality medical treatment will trickle down to nine other districts.
