The NITI Aayog on Friday launched a ‘Performance on Health Outcomes’. The index, the government think-tank said in a statement, would “nudge States towards transformative action in the Health sector.”

The guidebook for the index was released by CK Mishra, Secretary, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, and Amitabh Kant, CEO, NITI Aayog, on Friday at the first of a series of regional workshops. “The features of the index, measures and methods of data submission will be disseminated to the States through these workshops,” NITI Aayog statement said.

The indicators in the index, which would measure the annual incremental improvement by States, have been pre-tested in two States, NITI Aayog said. The index has been developed in coordination with States, and has integrated feedback from domestic and international experts, academicians and development partners.

“Monitorable indicators that form a part of Sustainable Development Goal in Health have been included in order to align these initiatives. It is anticipated that this health index will assist in State level monitoring of performance, serve as an input for providing performance-based incentives and improvement in health outcomes, thereby also meeting the citizens’ expectations,” the statement said.

Data and results from the index, which is also receiving technical assistance from the World Bank, would be made available on a web portal.
