AP to test learning programme

Our Bureau

CHENNAI: The Andhra Pradesh Government has launched a pilot project to test Linguaphone 21 programme, developed by a London-based institute, to enhance college students' proficiency in English.

Addressing a press conference here, Mr S. Krishnan, Managing Director, Lotus Learning Pvt Ltd, distributors in India for the programme developed by the UK-based Linguaphone, said the pilot project would be assessed by the middle of this year, and subsequently considered for wider application. The goal would then be to cover three-lakh graduates in the next eight years.

The move followed a study by the State Government, which indicated that English pronunciation and communication skills of graduates needed to be improved if the State was to emerge as a hub for information technology-enabled services. With various international players evincing interest in setting up operations such as call centres and back office processing, English communication skills were a key requirement. The Government had identified the Liguaphone programme as a part of the course material after evaluating over 150 English learning programmes, he added.

Mr Humphrey Walwyn, Director, Publishing and New Media, Linguaphone, said Linguaphone 21 was based on natural method of learning — listen-understand-speak — much like a child learning to speak in its mother tongue. The principle was based on Guided Total Immersion, which enabled the student to think in English and to speak confidently.
