Economy Industry & Economy - Economy Government - Politics More reforms, manufacturing top BJP agenda Our Bureau
Hyderabad , Jan. 11 SUSTAINED financial sector reforms, transforming India into a global manufacturing hub and attaining leadership position in the knowledge economy were identified by the BJP as three of the nine major areas of focus in its economic agenda for the country. Stating that the country was poised for an economic leap that would enable it to tackle the problems of poverty and under-development, the `Economic Resolutions' of the party passed at the ongoing two-day National Executive meeting said that the economic growth of 8.4 per cent was likely to be sustained throughout 2004. The Economic Resolutions, released to the media by Mr Arun Jaitley, Union Minister of Law, Commerce and Industry, also listed initiating a process of urban renewal, empowering agriculture, job-oriented growth, and extending the reach of prosperity as the strategy for transforming India into a developed country. Stating that inflation levels were under control, Mr Jaitley said that the corporate balance sheets have "never looked better. The stock market is booming to its best performance. Agriculture is poised for an all-time high production. The service sector is expanding at a very rapid pace. Forex reserves have crossed $100 billion. Hence, our status as a competitive economy has grown to such an extent that even developed economies are worried about loss of service sector jobs to India." On manufacturing, which contributed only 25 per cent of the GDP, the resolution said that it had to be expanded and the NDA Government had put in place several initiatives. On WTO, the resolution said that there was a mood of resurgence within India and a dramatic change in the external perception of the country.
