WTO chief to meet Commerce Minister today

Our Bureau

New Delhi , June 24

THE Director General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Dr Supachai Panitchpakdi, is scheduled to meet the new Commerce and Industry Minister, Mr Kamal Nath, here on Friday.

This is the first visit of Dr Panitchpakdi to India after the new United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government assumed office in the last week of May.

With change of guard at the Centre, indications are that the WTO chief might in his meetings with the Commerce Minister and other senior Government officials gather first-hand account of the stance that the new UPA Government would take on various WTO issues.

The next few weeks are quite crucial for resolving the existing deadlock in trade talks, with the developed countries and the developing countries working towards a framework agreement that would help take forward the stalled WTO talks.

The G-20, of which India is a part, has in its recent June 12 communiqué made it clear that any framework text must be fully consistent with the Doha mandate and lead to the establishment of modalities capable of ensuring substantial reduction in trade distorting domestic support, substantial increase in market access and phasing-out with a view to eliminating all forms of export subsidies.

The communiqué had also stressed the need for an operational and effective treatment that would take into account the food security and rural development needs.
