Automobiles Industry & Economy - Automobiles Car sales up 25 pc in June Our Bureau
New Delhi , July 13 WITH sales of the top three carmakers Maruti, Hyundai and Tata Motors in top gear last month, total car sales jumped 25 per cent in June 2004 over the same month last year. A total of 65,046 units were sold in the review month over 52,060 units in June 2003, data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) showed. Car market leader Maruti Udyog posted a 25.4 per cent rise in sales in the month at 30,781 units. Meanwhile, Hyundai, which is facing production constraints due to the current ramping up of its capacity, clocked a marginal 1.75 per cent jump at 12,150 units. On the back of rising sales of the Indica and Indigo, Tata Motors registered a rise of 44.8 per cent at 12,650 units. Commercial vehicle sales, an indicator of economic growth, went up by 30 per cent at 23,650 units over 18,186 units in June last year. The only sub-segment that saw a decline in the commercial vehicles category was medium and heavy passenger carriers (M&HPC). M&HCV sales went down by about 12.5 per cent in June. Total sales of M&H commercial vehicles grew by 27.1 per cent at 13,938 units while that of light commercial vehicles rose by 34.4 per cent at 9,712 units in June 2004. Both the leading commercial vehicles players - Ashok Leyland and Tata Motors saw sizeable growth in the month. Meanwhile, total two-wheeler sales grew by 14.6 per cent to 4.70 lakh units in June, with sales of motorcycles and step-throughs increasing by 12.8 per cent to 3.65 lakh units in the same month. A resurgent scooter market posted a rise of an impressive 12.1 per cent growth at 77,144 units. In the motorcycle and step-through category, market leader Hero Honda posted a rise of 24.2 per cent at 1.95 lakh units while its rival Bajaj Auto registered a jump of 14.5 per cent at 90,402 units in June.
