Kochi , Nov. 25

PARIVARTAN, the quality circle from Carborundum Universal Ltd, has been adjudged the best in the State Level quality circle competition organised by the CII-Kerala.

The second place went to Kayal Jyothi, the quality circle from National Thermal Power Corporation, Kayamkulam and third place was bagged by Pavithra, the quality circle from Nazareth Welfare Centre, a unit of V Guard Industries, Kottiyam near Kollam.

The winning three teams from Kerala will be competing with the winners of the other southern region states such as Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamilnadu and Pondichery at the southern regional level quality circle competition to be held during December.

According to a press release, CII has been continuously advocating the need for increased attention to quality and productivity by industry. CII is spreading the message of quality and the need for Total Quality Management. The month of November is being observed as the Quality Month every year by the CII and its member companies.

Quality circle is one of the employee participation methods. It implies the development of skills, capabilities, confidence and creativity of the people through cumulative process of education, training, work and participation. It also implies the creation of facilitative conditions and environment of work, which creates and sustains their motivation and commitment towards work excellence.

Quality circles have emerged as a mechanism to develop and utilise the tremendous potential of people for improvement in product quality and productivity.

Over the past five decades, the Indian industry has not placed much emphasis on quality due to largely protected market. However, with globalisation, the market has opened up and Indian companies are facing competition with all over the world. This has led to the customers having wider range of their choice.

It is therefore important to change the emphasis from Quality of product to Quality of work. If quality of work of all the people at all levels and in all functions is good, the quality of product cannot be anything but good. Towards this, companies are adopting various techniques like TQM, TPM etc. In this process, Quality Circle movement plays a vital role in improving the quality of a company, the release added.
