The Hindu Business Line : BSNL offers IT facilities to cos in Mangalore

BHARAT Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) is ready to provide all the facilities to the prospective IT (information technology) customers in Mangalore, according to Mr K. Balakrishnan, Chief General Manager, Southern Telecom Region, Chennai.

Presiding over a function to distribute Bharat Sanchar Sarathi and Sanchar Seva Padak awards to the staff of BSNL here on Thursday evening, he said IT firms are looking at Mangalore to set up their units.

There are plans to extend 10 lakh broadband connections by the end of December 2005, he said.

The Government has decided to take the total number of telephone connections to 25 crore in the country by 2007. To achieve this target, BSNL has to contribute at least 50 per cent to this figure, he said.

Stating that southern telecom region is responsible for the maintenance of long distance telecom network in the southern part of the country, he said it looks after the operation and maintenance of 12 large trunk automated exchanges in Chennai, Coimbatore, Ernakulam, Bangalore and Hyderabad.

At present, southern telecom region is maintaining optical fibre cable (OFC) route of 51,856 km and microwave route of 12,000 km for long distance network. It is maintaining 15,696 km of OFC route and 4,441 km of digital microwave systems in Karnataka, he added.

Mr K.J. Chacko, retired Chief General Manager of Karnataka circle, said that BSNL has kept pace with the technology. Customers are not looking at the service that the service provider can give, but looking at the service that they want. The roles of people and technology gain prominence in such a situation, he added.

The Vice-Chancellor of Mangalore University, Prof B. Hanumaiah, presented the awards.

Mr G. Raju, Mr R. Chengappa, Mr S. Lakshmanamurthy and Mr K. Malleshkumar (all from Bangalore sub-region) and Mr Parameshwarappa, Ms S.B. Shashikala and Mr Sharankumar (all from Hubli sub-region) received Bharat Sanchar Sarathi award; and Mr V. Kumar, Mr B. Shivalingappa and Mr K.V. Jagannath (all from Bangalore sub-region) and Mr Ambanna T. Devapur and Mr K. Manohar (both from Hubli sub-region) received Sanchar Seva Padak awards on the occasion.
