Doors not closed for dropped anti-AIDS drugs, says WHO

THE World Health Organisation (WHO) will consider re-listing the dropped anti-AIDS or anti-retroviral drugs manufactured by Indian generic companies if they comply with the international requirements and standards.
"We have full faith in the capability of Indian manufacturers to produce quality drugs, but they need to comply with good clinical and laboratory practices," said Ms Joy Phumaphi, Assistant Director General (Family and Community Health), WHO.
A few months ago, the WHO had dropped two drugs manufactured by Cipla and three by Ranbaxy from its pre-qualification list. Just a couple of days ago, it reinstated two drugs from the Cipla stable. The remaining three drugs made by Ranbaxy would be enlisted the moment they fulfil the specifications prescribed by the WHO, she said.
Meanwhile, the UN organisation also warned India not to be complacent in its fight against HIV/AIDS. Though the country has been successful in stabilising the situation regarding the spread of the killer disease, it is far from conquering it, she added.
"Today woman was the face of AIDS, whether as infected or as affected. When infected with AIDS, she gets the least support and medical care, and when living with the infected, it is she who has to nurse and give all type of support to the victim," said Ms Phumaphi.
She further added that the economic situation in India has also contributed to the spread of AIDS as there is large-scale movement of workers from one city to another.
