Act to govern functioning of NITs on cards

THE Union Government is likely to introduce an Act to govern the functioning of national institutes of technology in the country, according to the Director of National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), Dr S.S. Murthy.
Presiding over the inaugural of the third global convention of the NITK Alumni Association at Surathkal in Mangalore on Saturday, he said this Act would be similar to the one governing the functioning of Indian institutes of technology (IIT).
Prof Murthy said that 18 NITs in the country would receive Rs 20 crore each over the next three years under the Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP).
In his welcome address, the Managing Director of Unisoft India Pvt Ltd, Mr K. Yajnanarayana, who is also the president of the organising committee of the convention, said that industry-institution relationship is needed in the research and development activities. In this regard, NITK has signed an agreement with IBM on e-learning project. Two to three such projects are in the pipeline, he said.
Urging the members of the association to contribute for the Student Welfare Fund, he said the association is planning to have a Rs 1-crore fund to help economically-weaker meritorious students in the college.
Mr P. Vijaya Kumar, Additional Secretary at Cabinet Secretariat, Govt of India, who is another alumnus of the college, urged the fellow members of the association to work together to help the institute in getting the IIT status.
Reminiscing his days in the college in the late Sixties, the President of Moser Baer India Ltd, Mr P.M. Pai, said that home-grown systems, innovations and engineers have made India proud in various areas of activities.
