All bank branches to receive donations

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Dec. 30

IN a bid to facilitate donations to the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund (PMNRF), the PMO has asked all branches of commercial banks to receive such donations. It has also nominated a nodal branch of such banks in New Delhi for collecting such contributions. This was decided in a meeting between officials of the PMO and the Indian Bank Association here on Thursday.

Explaining the mechanics put in place to expedite remittances, the Reserve Bank of India said in a statement that contributions to the PMNRF are notified for 100 per cent deduction from taxable income under section 80(G) of the Income Tax Act.

The Labour Ministry has deployed medical relief teams comprising 150 doctors and para-medical staff to affected areas. Meanwhile, the Employees Provident Fund Organisation, also working under the aegis of the Labour Ministry, has made special arrangements for expeditious disposal of claims from entitled claimants in the affected areas. It has set up special cells of officials to provide provident fund and pension to the family members of the fund killed in last Sunday's tsunami fury.

The EPFO has also decided to grant a non-refundable advance up to Rs 5,000 from the PF account of each member besides allowing them to withdraw from the Fund an advance for repair of houses.
