`Hike paddy purchase price'

Our Correspondent

MADURAI: The Tiruchi District Cauvery Delta Farmers Welfare Association has urged the Centre to increase the procurement price for paddy.

The President of the Association, Mr G. Kanagasabai, while welcoming the State Government's decision to open more direct purchase centres in the district, in a statement said the Centre has increased the minimum statutory price for wheat and sugarcane but has made no mention of paddy for a few years now.

With the cost of cultivation on the increase, the government should fix the procurement price at Rs 800 a quintal, he said, adding that the State Government should meet the incidental charges of Rs 100.

He also appealed to the Government to waive land tax and cess this year as samba cultivation has not been to the expected level.
