AFTER prolonged delays, the Rs 350-crore Calcutta Leather Complex is finally going to be operational in March.
For a change, the tanners, who had created a number of obstacles in the past in the way of their relocation to the complex from within the city limits, were now pressing for an early opening of the complex.
"We are hopeful of inaugurating the project in March", said Dr Sabyasachi Sen, Principal Secretary in the West Bengal Commerce and Industries Ministry.
As the complex will host a special economic zone (SEZ) for leather and allied industries and a leather goods park aided by a training centre and design studio, the project is expected to to attract investment, including FDI in West Bengal.
The Council of Leather Exports (CLE) has already taken the initiative to help the West Bengal Government to showcase the project as an attractive investment destination.
The projected early opening of the complex is expected to end the problems of the 50 odd tanneries, mostly new investors, who were quick to set up shop in CLC last year but were not allowed access to the common effluent treatment plant (CETP).
