`Left backing due to political exigencies'

Our Bureau

New Delhi , March 22

THE Left parties, who were opposed to the Patent (Amendment) Bill 2005 till Monday, decided to allow passage of the Bill at a meeting in the Parliament House on Tuesday morning taking into account political exigencies.

CPI leader and Member of Parliament, Mr Gurudas Dasgupta, told Business Line, "We had received the copies of the amendments in the morning. Only after that we had gone through them."

The CPI decided to remain neutral but then the Government requested that the Left parties take a common stand.

Mr Dasgupta, however, said that the decision was taken considering the situation that the Government may land up in under the current circumstances. "The decision was taken keeping in mind political exigencies," he said.
