Coimbatore engg college inks pact with US co

L.N. Revathy

Coimbatore , March 27

THE Pollachi-based Dr Mahalingam College of Engineering and Technology is emerging as a recruiting ground for most corporates.

Head-hunters have been awed not by the big campus but the infrastructural investment by the college management.

The decade-old institution has managed to establish 20 value-added centres within its campus by signing MoUs with leading corporates, including IT giants. These tie-ups have been aimed at enhancing students' skills and gearing them to be industry-ready even as they graduate.

MCET and the US-based Caritor inked an agreement, with the latter offering to train candidates picked off-campus on coding practices in live project-like environment. "We have short-listed 15 candidates during the current year. The company will train these students in the campus itself. Until now, freshers were trained after enrolment. Now, they will be ready to join the stream in two-days time, after the induction programme," Mr Srikanth Rao, Senior Vice-President (Human Capital), Caritor (India) Private Ltd, said.

Caritor's investment on training potential candidates ranges between 7 and 10 per cent. Bulk of the recruits is without prior industry experience. The company anticipates a steep rise in fresh-graduate head count as it grows in size.

With 2,400 on its roll at present, Caritor is planning to add another 1,300 this fiscal.

To a query on employee retention strategy, Mr Rao categorically stated that the company did not believe in retaining employees through the bond route. "Career growth is phenomenal at Caritor. We offer facilities for multiple career paths - as architects, multi-specialists, project development etc."

Caritor is looking for similar tie-ups (with institutions). The centre at MCET has been its maiden venture.
