Events ITC's subsidiary scores a century Our Bureau
Kolkata , May 5 FORTUNE Resort Central Darjeeling completed 100 years of operations in April. Fortune Park Hotels Ltd (FPHL), a wholly owned subsidiary of ITC, which manages the heritage property, launched the centenary celebrations on May 1. It is tourist time now in the Darjeeling hills, and the hotel on Robertson Road, which offers 31 rooms (including 11 Fortune Club rooms and 5 standard rooms), has planned a series of commemorative events, including classy food festivals, between now and December 31, 2005. The events, according to Mr Mandeep S. Lamba, President, FPHL, will focus on various aspects and personalities of the region who have helped create the Darjeeling of today. A commemorative volume titled "Darjeeling Re-visited", sponsored by ITC and published by FPHL, was released on May 1, in Darjeeling by the West Bengal Minister for Urban Development and Hill Affairs, Mr Asok Bhattacharya. The Minister said it was good that one of the oldest hotels in Darjeeling has not been allowed to fade away. "On the contrary, it has been upgraded into a very attractive hotel." Mentioning that tourism in Darjeeling was now showing steady growth, he said, "We hope that this favourable trend will spread to the entire region". The hotel functioned as Central Hotel for nearly 90 years under J.F.Madan and his sons and grandsons who lived in Calcutta, and in 1985, was sold to Mr M.P.Agarwal. And in 1999, Mr Agarwal signed an agreement with Fortune Park Hotels, which has since been managing the property. Says Mr Lamba: "The hotel has undergone some design changes, conceived and created by local architect Mr Shashish Prakash, bringing in plenty of natural light and allowing foliage and flowers to flourish in the lobby. The Tea Lounge with a glass ceiling and French windows offers an enchanting view of the Himalayan range during the day, and transforms into part of the bar at night, providing a panoramic view of the twinkling lights of Darjeeling."
