Rubber Board launches awareness campaign

Our Correspondent

Kottayam , May 17

THE Rubber Board has launched a massive awareness campaign to educate the rubber growers about the necessity of getting united under the umbrella of their own group, the `Rubber Producers Societies' ( RPSs).

Mr S.M. Desalphine, Chairman, inaugurated the campaign at Darsana Auditorium here. The campaign will go on until July 15.

The Rubber Board started to organise the small growers in groups called RPSs during the second half of eighties. Now it has become one of the major organised movements in the country with over 2,000 such groups in its fold.

However, only less than 50 per cent of our 10 lakh rubber growers have been brought under the RPSs net. This year's campaign of the Board will mainly focus on bringing growers who are not members under the umbrella of RPSs.

Involvement of small and marginal farmers and women in the rubber sector will be ensured either by bringing them under RPSs or by the formation of allied self-help groups.

Mr Desalphine said that the Central Government has approved a scheme with an outlay of Rs 159 crore to support the small rubber growers.

Dr A.K. Krishnakumar, Rubber Production Commissioner, presided over the function and delivered the keynote address.
