INTERNATIONAL bandwidth prices are set to come down with the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India reinforcing its earlier announced ceiling for International Private Leased Circuits (IPLC).

The new ceiling, which is up to 64 per cent lower than the existing ceiling, will bring down the tariffs for international bandwidth from India to Europe, US and Asia Pacific. The move is expected to benefit large bandwidth consumers such as BPO units, IT-enabled services and Internet Service Providers. No major impact on international long distance calls is expected since bandwidth costs do not add to the total costs significantly when it comes to voice traffic.

This is the second time that the telecom regulator has attempted to bring down the international bandwidth tariffs. Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd which has almost 80 per cent of the IPLC market, had opposed TRAI's initial order announced in March and had got a stay order from the telecom tribunal.
