Mangalore , Oct. 9

THE Karnataka Chief Minister, Mr Dharam Singh, has said the process of formation of a special purpose vehicle (SPV) for the implementation of the Mangalore special economic zone (SEZ) will begin soon.

Addressing presspersons here on Sunday, he said the Prime Minister has cleared the proposals of Oil and Natural Gas Corporation to invest around Rs 21,000 crore in the proposed SEZ project.

Mr Singh said all the processes related to the SPV formation, including the appointment of a nodal officer, will begin soon. The Government will soon issue a notification in this regard, he said.

The Petroleum Ministry had raised some objections on the investments by ONGC in the proposed SEZ in Mangalore. Later, the investment proposals were cleared by the Prime Minister's Office.

Mr Singh, who held a meeting of top officials of the Naxal-affected districts such as Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Chikmagalur, said the State Government had requested the Union Government to amend the Forest Act to solve problems related to the tribal people in the national park areas. The amended Act will also help solve Naxalite problems in the national park areas.

The State Government will also provide more infrastructure to police in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Chikmagalur districts to tackle the Naxal problem, he said.
